Community Involvement

The Witches Of Eastwick-WATERDALE Players Inc

Over the summer of 2012-2013 I was asked to choreograph the musical The Witches of Eastwick for a Bundoora company called WATERDALE Players Inc.

During my time Choreographing the production of WATERDALE’s witches of Eastwick I experienced an extensive amount of professional learning and personal development. This included working in a team with a Director, Musical Director and Producer and well as a cast of 40 to achieve the best show we could manage.

Some key things I learnt about working with the cast were the diversity in their abilities. Just like any classroom students are all diverse in the knowledge they come into the class with and the best way for them to learn. Throughout the process of a production many things are explored just like in the classroom, however it is essential that the students/cast members are willing to let themselves be pushed out of their comfort zone.
I place great importance in connecting the school to the community and a production is the best way to do this. It allows students from different year levels to mix and support each other and gets students involved in extracurricular activities while working with their peers to achieve something truly special.

The support received by parents and the community to school productions is outstanding and can really have great effect on a student learning and the communication between the school and the parents/carers.
The experiences gained by all involved in a production or extracurricular activities that allows the community involvement with the school permits strong intellectual and social skills that are not available in most classes. I endeavour in my time as a teacher to keep allowing our students and our communities these opportunities.
